Evo Morales is my hero for Panchamama, being the first world President to pass the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth. This law recognizes our sacred Mother Earth, and all beings in her, as a living entity with equal legal rights as human beings.

Her Rights are now able to be defended in the human legal system in Bolivia, with punitive actions for those who don’t Respect Her. For example, violators now must take rapid restorative action for any harm done, or citizens can act as representatives of Mother Earth to sue those who harm Her.

“The environmental functions and natural processes … cannot be considered as commodities, but as sacred gifts from Mother Earth,” the law says.

In addition to being the first President to recognize our Sacred Living Earth and hold humans Accountable for how we treat Her, Evo Morales is urging the United Nations to adopt the Law as a common standard of responsibility for ALL nations.

To paraphrase the Law, which includes the Inherent Rights of Mother Earth and Obligations of human beings to Mother Earth:

• We are all part of Mother Earth, an indivisible, living community of interrelated and interdependent beings with a common destiny;
• We gratefully acknowledge that Mother Earth is the source of life, nourishment and learning and provides everything we need to live well;
• We recognize that the capitalist system and all forms of depredation, exploitation, abuse and contamination have caused great destruction, degradation and disruption of Mother Earth, putting life as we know it today at risk;
• We are convinced that in an interdependent living community it is not possible to recognize the rights of only human beings without causing an imbalance within Mother Earth…
